Piled Higher and Deeper: A Graduate Student Comic Strip Collection

Amazon.com: Books: Piled Higher and Deeper: A Graduate Student Comic Strip Collection

I finally bought my copy and I got it with me! Woohooo.
It’s a pretty awesome comic strip written by a Stanford PhD student (well, I think maybe he graduated finally).

It’s funny and very true to life about graduate student life (well at least for the sciences). But as I said it’s funny and true which makes it sad and depressing.

I’m laughing at the stress these people are going through and I’ve been through it myself. Makes it even more depressing.

But it’s nice to know I’m not alone.

Anywayz, if you go to PhD Comics you can actually read all the archives from the get go. The link is also there, along with Calvin and Hobbes.

Enjoy!

Oh! I think the book is only the first 5 years of the strip :-)

My Mom’s visit

I’m waiting for her to arrive. Her flight should have reached at about 20 minutes to 5 and she should have left the airport at half 5 and should be here within the half hour (now being 6 pm and I have to pray!!)

Like a dutiful daughter I asked her what she wanted to eat when she arrived and this is what she told me:

Assalaamu Alaykum
Dear Well shukran for asking
I will like Arnold’s bread and boiled eggs , a green salad and grapes and
ice cream for dessert, also some nice hot tea would be most appreciated as
soon as I arrive
Love you and take care
wa alaykum assalaam
mom
NB: I went and bought myself a pair of New Balance Walking Shoes at Shoe
Locker so we do not have to go looking for them as soon as I arrive in
Amherst

even more specific about the bread! Well I don’t have it but have two selections for her pleasure.

  • Salad??? Do I look like a salad person? To which she wondered what I eat and what it would take to buy a cucumber and she could cut it up even!! But I just did my groceries and it took me about a month to do those…
  • grapes??? granted I am sad that all the bananas looked green and that I don’t have fruit but grapes? lord!!!
  • I’m not sure if the egg is hard boiled or not..I guess she’ll see!
  • Ice cream – that I have and bought for her when I went grocery shopping!!
  • and i have tea..it makes me feel better

Anyway, she thinks I don’t love her but guess what! I went to Bread & Circus and got all (or a substitute) for what she wanted. And I got watercress (which I love and now will have help to finish it before it goes brown) and more tomatoes so that’s a salad I think with cucumbers. I have dressings too.

And while I was there I bought bittersweet chocolate and bittersweet orange (natural oils) chocolate to make orange chocolate truffles sometime this week, hopefully in time for the Departmental Potluck next Friday (o no! can i make that??) Maybe I’ll send some home with mom as an interim gift for my friend who got married Sunday. I wonder….

Oh well, I won’t be posting much because mom will be here and I will be otherwise occupied unless I am at work trying to do work.

I think I have to finish my write up by the 30th and I haven’t started yet! I am very worried.

Chocolate Cake

I baked a chocolate cake yesterday!
And, frosted it in the evening.

I’m not the greatest cake baker so it’s a box cake and a tub of bought frosting. But who cares.

Look!
