‘Id preparations
Thursday, the official holiday for Divali in Trinidad & Tobago, my mom and my sister and I were supposed to make sweets.
But my mom and dad and most of the Jamaat spent alot of the night awake in devotion. Ramadhan is a holy month and the last ten nights are supposed to be extra special and there is one night, Lailatul Qadr (Night of Power), which is even moreso and you spend Ramadhan in search of it because we don’t know the actual day.
So, my parents didn’t get up til maybe 11 or 12 except once when someone came to the gate.
And then since mom was tired she was like…well we could do sweets Friday instead…and you and Chennette can make mamoul. So that’s all we did Thursday.
And we took pictures…the joy of a digital camera :-D
She posted them to her shutterfly account so either I’ll post a link soon or…something…
Lily & Chennette in the kitchen! What joy!
So Friday, yesterday, we were supposed to make Barfi, Gulab Jamoon (or what we in Trinidad call Gulab Jamoon) and fruit cake. We didn’t make the Barfi but we have pictures of the rest…so you’ll see.
Friday was very very very tiring.
I was in a bad mood after the lightening storm for reasons beyond my comprehension and then woke up late. But we made about 180 Gulab Jamoon and a couple fruit cakes. And blanched and shelled almonds. And who knows what else.
I don’t think I’ve ever been sooooo involved in the ‘Id preparations.
Today, we’re making barfi and mom is seasoning meat for Chicken Biryani and they’re setting up all the things to bake, like a Mousakka and Kibbe (lamb and vegetarian) so tomorrow we’ll just have to bake them.
Sometime today I’ll make brownies :-)
Lovely cocoa brownies.
:)
There must be something else, but I’m not feeling so great so I’ve come upstairs to rest my evil tummy and fix up the house a bit.
At least yesterday’s headache is gone.

Just curious (because of the US use of similar words): what is ‘barfi’?
