Word Quandaries
I hope I spelt all that right.
almond
How do you pronounce almond? ah-mond or al-mond?
If you’re Guyanese you don’t need to answer this question.
islamic
Where did this word come from?
Almost every time I hear it, it jars. It just doesn’t sound right.
Islamic people.
Islamic whatever.
Okay, I might give Islamic Architecture an okay…but otherwise…well, Islamic books etc.
Wait, the really annoying one is Islamics.
You know, I think quite possibly my whole life I never used the word Islamic as a noun.
I am not an Islamic.
I am not an Islamic woman.
My religion is Islam.
I am Muslim.
*sigh*
I am probably being silly…but still…
stupid word…but that’s just me.
Oh, and as far as I know (correct me if I’m wrong) it’s a soft ‘s’, not Iz-lam or Muz-lim but Iss-lam or Muss-lim.
I’m no good at spelling pronunciation.
I don’t speak for anybody else because I never asked anybody else.

Ahl-mond. but with a very understated “l” sound.
Islamic? Perhaps a Westernization – some all-purpose word that can be used to add a label to things for media/propoganda purposes?
Most folks I know take their news like babies suckling. And what they produce from it when I try to discuss current events is much the same as that which babies produce.
Sorry, didn’t mean to steal your rant. :-)

Oh, and Muss-lim. But then half of the guys who worked for me when I was at MCI were Muslim, so I have perhaps a little more insight than is usual.

Well, we don’t pronounce the “L” in almond. And of course, growing up you think everybody doesn’t :-)
You are free to rant!
I guess I can pardon the hard “s” in Muslim and Islam because pronunciation is a tricky thing and some people just don’t know. But why oh why say Moslem when you see a “u” and an “i”?

Just thought I’d be annoying and point out that a dictionary may have been handy for the title of this rant – “quandary” doesn’t drop the “a” when you pluralise it. Just the “y”.

I never said *I* was perfect! :)
Buy me a dictionary.
And a calculator.
