New fan for my Frankenstein!

So, I finally decided that instead of *monitoring* the fan I would just buy a new one and stop worrying.

I walk into a computer store with mom and my motherboard manual (in case people think I’m stupid and in case I think they are stupid)…and ask if they have any fans.

The guy says no, not at the moment.

So, I ask, when will you get some…

At *this* point he asks me what kind and I may say for my computer and start pulling out manual while my mother goes well I hope it’s for a computer (now, *I* do know there are CPU fans, Case fans, PS fans, extra fans, System fans…but I start simple). So, when I say for my processor he says yes, what kind and sees my book and takes it.

But what my mother and I don’t get is…why did he say no?
I mean I wasn’t specific about what kind of fan. I know this. But he said no without asking what kind I wanted. Mom says he was busy chatting so maybe he didn’t want to do anything else. And then it turns out YES he does have one.

Then when I ask about paste and he shows me the strips in the box he also says that AMD recommends no paste. Well, I think they recommend tape, but I’m not sure. I don’t know all this stuff yet. But I think they do recommend *something* and he knows I’m buying a fan and a heatsink to replace an old one. So I ask him, so what do I use instead? He says well they come with them…

But, I’m buying a new one. Should I not use those strips he just showed me? Should I use those and nothing else? What are you saying exactly? Clean out all the paste from my processor and don’t put any on my new heatsink and just attach it?

I don’t get it. They recommend don’t use it because it comes with it. But if I get a new one and have to wipe it all off the processor then don’t use it?

Boy am I confused.

Or maybe I’m being overly sensitive.

Incidentally, what should I clean the old paste off with?
