‘Id-ul-Fitr Menu: Basboosa
I made basboosa. It’s a semolina (and sugar! and yoghurt) cake soaked in syrup. Those almonds are supposed to be pressed in the centre of each slice. They’re also supposed to be whole.
It tastes good!
For some reason, in grad school, all the arab people in the MSA called it harisa and that’s what I call it but…the Lebanese cookbook calls it…basboosa and calls harisa some kind of spice mix so if anybody can provide some edification, please do!
Is it Harissa? Is it Basboosa? Well according to this page (search for harissa), that’s what Alexandrians call it and they put more butter and sugar in it!

Wow. That looks good. And I like Basboosa. It’s more fun to say. My daughter Skye has made a good friend here in our new home State – a Muslim girl – who is originally from Sudan. I have not seen her name spelled, but I think it should be Na’hala. She’s been observing Ramadan and Skye has learned a lot about it from her.
