Speed Test/Green Dot

Very cute speed test.

I wish the state of internet in Trinidad was better.

My mom’s letters to our ISP (GreenDot) usually results in someone1 frantically trying to contact her/us. It was a beautiful letter.

But will they do anything?

We asked them to reduce our package to 128k/64k because when I don’t get the 64k and the good service I won’t feel as hurt2 as when I don’t get the 256k/64k.

Should I just get a new ISP? But who? Dial-up with TSTT? Try to get EV-DO with TSTT? But why pay that if I already don’t trust TSTT with my dial-up. My options are really just other wireless providers like GreenDot (Lisa, Caribel, Carib-Net). I don’t know if they’re any good. Should I pay another huge hookup fee to just get rid of them?

Should I just wait for Flow to come? They’re my cable company and some people don’t trust them either. But…their cable service here is…passable…is passable enough? Will they really come here like I was told?

Oh well, here’s my speedtest (clearly they’ve not reduced it to 128k yet and my upload still…sucks!)

  1. Almost always seems to be a DIFFERENT someone. Passing the buck so it’s always tell me what’s the problem, how big was the file you were trying to download? (Like it was one file I was downloading.) You know if it’s a file several megabytes in size it will take longer. Idiots! I’m not an idiot. Obviously. Did you run speed tests on toast.net? I’ve run speed tests everywhere. How else do you think I’m telling you…and idiot if you talked to people who we were communicating with before…well…hmmm…they would’ve told you yes we did run speed tests and we call and tell you it sucks.

The thing is, I’m tired of talking to someone new. Mom and I are just tired. We don’t want to repeat the same old story every single time. It’s tiring and draining and you start questioning questioning and I’m just fed up and mom’s just fed up. Stop stealing our money and give us good service without all the cut outs. Come check our service too.

  2. FYI:
    US Exchange Rate: US$1 = TT$6.33 (approx)
    256k/64k package: TT$375 + VAT = TT$431.25 (a month)
    128k/64k package: TT$275 + VAT = TT$316.25 (a month)

    Hurt Savings: TT$115 = US$18 (approx)

Is reduced download speed really worth US$18? Who knows! I just don’t see why I should give them all our money.

  1. bleh i’m with the missing in action fiberline … i dont get the speedz they promised… :(

  2. beatz yourz tho :O

  3. BAH!

What does fiberline promise? What do you get?

    *sob*

  4. I am married to somewhat of a tech geek who also checks the actual speed of our broadband connection from time to time. He often finds we’re not getting what we’re paying for, too. Annoys him no end. ;-)

  5. I pay GD$9,980 for 256Kbps down from GT&T; can’t find what the upload is supposed to be. When I signed up, pretty sure it was for 128 down…
    Anyway this is mine

And as far as I know, I usually get what I pay for. Which is great! Some things have to be better about Georgetown.
    FYI – US $1= GD $200

  6. darn…no image linking huh?
    well I got 217/106

  7. i may have turned it off for spam purposes

    YOU GOT 217/106 in Guyana??
    Wait til mom sees this!

Yes when you signed up you were 128k and you said you don’t need 256k…you mean it’s 256k now???
I think it was 64k upload but who knows…

  8. ewe_are_here: you should be annoyed too! you’re paying for something you’re not getting when you could be spending it on you instead.

    also, you’re american…complain!!!

you can post the actual link to the image you know…Chennette, TriniGourmet!

  9. :) lilandra rulez :)

    i gonna make a strawberry lime tart…
i was spposed to do a lot today
all i did was sleep and grumble :(

  10. Ooo!

I went to the doctor and pricesmart and saw a 15″ flat panel tv for $2600…to buy or not to buy!

I wish I had more sleep.
    I hate Saturdays.

  11. i want a flat panel teevee :(

  12. that’ll fit in the kitchen? we should get it then…by which I mean you and Mom

  13. It’s a tiny one TriniGourmet for our Gourmet kitchen.
    Audiovox 15″
And if it doesn’t work we can always return it.
You mean you’re not going to contribute financially? Some of us need to leave our job pronto!

Also, dvd rental place up the road by us was held up by a cruising primera…

  14. For all those complaining about they are not getting what they are paying for, you first need to understand what you are paying for before complaining. You are paying for a DSL circuit not a dedicated, on a DSL circuit the provider does NOT gurantee the bandwidth, what you get and when you get it will depend on who else is using the internet at the same time.

If you want to get 256 all the time then get a dedicated link. There is a reason why one is called a DSL and the other a dedicated and again there is a reason why one costs 20 times the cost of the other. You get what you pay for.

For the one who is married to a techy, he should go back to school.

Having said that Greendot do tend to deliver much better then the rest.

  15. I don’t expect to get a full 256 download and I don’t expect to get a full 64 upload all the time.

I don’t expect to never get it and to be asked, “Do you need your upload?” or “What are you using it for?”

Unfortunately, I have nobody else in Trinidad to compare Greendot with…and it can’t be compared with TSTT ADSL anywayz because it’s not the same service.

  16. so techy – are you usually so obnoxious or only in anonymity?

you have no clue what the level of knowledge of the posters here are – have you any idea what ewe’s husband DID go to school for? Or Lilandra for that matter…

I am glad you think it’s good service, but there’s an acknowledged unresolved history of problems with Greendot’s service in this particular instance. Also, no matter the service, if someone ADVERTISES a speed, then they should do their best to provide the industry accepted standard for that speed – piling on users to the service is not an acceptable excuse. We all accept that you don’t get 100% of the advertised speed – but there is a reason they use a particular speed to draw in customers, because there’s a reasonable expectation that you put in place systems to deal with the number of users you add on to ensure that the speed available is 85-90%. Otherwise it’s fraud and in breach of the service contract.

Lilandra wasn’t complaining about speeds of 247 down!! She was complaining that they clearly hadn’t reduced it to 128 speed as requested, AND that the download, although advertised at 64 was barely crossing half that. Further, if you read her previous posts on the subject, you’d realise that Greendot NEVER claimed the poor quality of service was due to users, and further that her complaints were also in relation to the patchy nature of the service, not necessarily the speed (except when the upload was down to 17 regularly).

I know you may not drop by again, but it’s never a good idea to underestimate people based on little knowledge and then insult them. Apart from the technical expertise, we’ve also got legal to make our case :-)

  17. Speed Test/Green Dot Update…

They’ve finally reduced my speed to 128k/64k a few days ago.
I haven’t been able to get in contact with them about the service because they call during work hours. Silly them.
