Random Computer Thought or The Kitchen!
Well you know, I feel weird having three computers to my name. I guess I’m not a true geek. I haven’t made myself happy with my linux box yet. I don’t know why. Time? I may not be a true linux-er.
*sigh*
I know what would do it tho…installing Linux *only* on my powerbook.
I just have to. But, even tho I don’t use flash alot, I don’t think I could live without it. But whenever I use Xubuntu for a prolonged period of time on the powerbook, I think why not. Whenever I use OSX for a prolonged period of time…I think um…flash um…
But that’s not what this post is about.
It’s about the other two computers.
The iMac G4 has been saved because mom uses it. I use it too occasionally because I, oddly enough, have neither MS Office (yuck! it’s for work) nor tetex installed on my powerbook. But they’re on the iMac. (oh, see, if i was a true geek, i wouldn’t be procrastinating about reinstalling and personalizing that imac but haven’t done it since i bought it…yuck!).
It’s slow when I use it but it’s a 17″ screen which is priceless when compared to itsy 12″. I would use it.
But why aren’t I using my linux box? (Well, to be honest, I could probably use two computers…it’s the three that sends me crazy or maybe it’s that I haven’t set up the third…)
Well, first there were the building problems.
Then there were the OS problems.
Then I really hate that huge CRT and should take the smaller CRT.
And maybe it’s where it is.
And I’m accustomed to my powerbook.
If it were my only computer that’d be fine but I have too much. See, if I were a true geek, I’d be using it to do other stuff (I did intend to, but never had the time…story of my life).
Well, you know what I always thought would be absolutely great?
A Kitchen computer.
So we wouldn’t have to tote the laptops downstairs (okay, so wireless and portable why not!) but still…gets messed up with food you know :)
And finding the plugs that make positioning laptop convenient.
Also, iMac would be great…little footprint, not much space, all in one…but it mightn’t fit too right between the upper and lower cabinets. Also we have the little TV (old 14″ CRT now replaced by 15″ flat panel LCD..yum…speakers on both sides!!!) and the cable box there so there really is no room.
Well, my mom reads this blog, so let’s see how she likes this idea.
Put Linux Box downstairs! (and yay! I free up a desk or place in my room).
How will I manage that?
Well, plug VGA (VGA right? not s-video) cable from LinuxBox into new TV, maybe plug audio cables in( I guess if we want to watch DVDs…I’d have to make sure that everything works right?…do we have audio cables? I wonder what we need?).
Then make the Linux Box very mouse driven (and I really mean that. So, tho I don’t like desktop shortcuts for KitchenComputer it is good…). Have shortcuts to URLs (example allrecipes.com etc) on desktop. Have decently organized and frequently used bookmarks available so we don’t actually have to pull the keyboard out (okay we will need to type into the search box but we could have some sort of syncing thing going on (deli.cio.us etc) and just pull it out when absolutely necessary). The mouse can stay out.
Hmmm.
I should be sleeping.
But wait, where would this big case go?
I know that too.
INSIDE THE LOWER CABINET!
so the tv is on top the counter/lower cabinet.
Put PC in lower cabinet and get some holes drilled for cords to pass.
And we…have KitchenComputer…and a decently spec’d wireless one too.
Doesn’t that sound great?
Granted no TV and Computer at the same time but…there must be an input button for quick switching.
And we can do away with stupid big CRTs.
Okay maybe keep the small one in case someone wants to go online downstairs (guests!) and someone else wants to use computer.
So…what do you think?
Does kitchen computer really need a DVD burner and 300 GB harddrive?
Oh well…that’s what it’ll get!
Then, I wouldn’t feel so guilty anymore about so many computers.
And we’ll finally have a computer downstairs where we need it!
And I’ll have my desk free!!!
*bliss*

I’m NOT a crazy person.
It’s a good idea.
Wait til mom hears.
I’m sure she will *love* this

You could always buy a server/mainframe, and install it in your basement and run everything from a station, and switch which OS and Hardware when you need it, from there. I don’t know about the MAC, but Linux and Window$ will work together, sharing files, programs and hardware.

Well my linux box was going to be my toy server (for experimentation and learning all the things i don’t know) but i haven’t had time to learn much
i only been learning LaTeX because i make myself *use* it
*sigh*
The Mac will share files.
Well, I will figure it out.
Oh, we don’t got basements and attics in the tropics (in general)
i like the kitchen computer idea :-p

[...] If you read my previous post on how to dispose of my third, rarely used computer, you will see that I’m thinking of putting it in the kitchen. [...]
