Alton Says…

Mom (as she is putting eggs from the carton into the fridge tray): Alton says…
Me: Yes mom, Alton says the best place to store your eggs is in the carton in which you bought it! NOT in the fridge tray.
Mom (as she continues stashing the eggs in the evil place of broken eggs): No! You not listening to me! Alton says the more brown sugar you put in a cookie…

I don’t think I need to continue. This is just to give you an idea of the monsters that have been created.

Guess who’s on now!!! (A very young person).

I remember the first episode of Good Eats that I ever saw.

It was about butter.

I had never seen it before; had no clue what was going on. Was this some skit? farce? comedy? lame show?

You know, Alton Brown is a lawyer in a court arguing the benefits of butter. It was really campy and if you didn’t know what was going on…lame…!

Later, somehow on discussion with Jamie (the pusher of all things food and fiction) I realized that this was *the* show that he’s always going on about…this was GOOD EATS!!!

And you know what, I liked it. I liked the diagram of the cow. I liked the cookies Jamie made. I liked it even though I thought taking 2 days to make a pizza crust a nightmare (I don’t think I will ever make *that* recipe…I need my impulse pizza)!

When we didn’t have Food Network it was hard. CNC3 shows some Food Network sometimes but it’s never Alton. There is a lot of that person…I don’t want to put the name here but okay (GIADA!). I needed my Alton fix. I printed his cookie recipes but never actually *saw* the episode!!!

I somehow got my sister hooked. We were converts.

I sent season 1 to my brother and sister-in-law in Saudi Arabia.

When he got back here…his addictive personality shone through (you know, the one where he tries to stop us drinking coke by telling us it’s bad for us when it’s really because he’s an addict and has no self-control and doesn’t want it around; or where he and his wife watched Battlestar Galactica and loved it…but he knew it was *bad* and *addictive* so he broke the discs…!!!). He happened to watch the episode in which Alton Brown made burgers and decided we had to make it EXACTLY LIKE THAT. Anywayz, I don’t need to repeat all that tralala since Chennette blogged about it already.

Mom got hooked too. His show is so very informative. It tells you how and why as opposed to just recipes. Chennette loves it because she loves learning technique. Well so do we. Dad…thinks it’s entertainment…

And the conversation quoted at the beginning is a sign of what our house has become – a family who is willing to quote Alton Brown, “Alton says <do this>” and “Alton says <do that>”. Does this mean we listen?

Well, what are you going to do?
