Kiss Chocolate Truffle Cake

Kiss is a bakery in Trinidad (& Tobago).
Maybe bakery isn’t the right term.
Commerical bread maker/supplier.

When I was young, I remember them doing loaves of bread and cakes (like your hostess cupcakes?).

Then there would be there mass-produced birthday cakes sold in the grocery too.

A little later on, you could order specific cakes from the factory.

Then they started delving into specialty cakes (for the holidays I think).

They changed their chocolate cupcake recipe a few times. I never did like the change. But still, I preferred it to the US Hostess cakes.

Then they started having booths in malls and such with slices of their specialty cakes.

Their cupcakes started coming out in different flavours (not just chocolate or lemon).

One day during the last year, I went to a booth and was looking and thinking of buying a slice of something…for me…for dad…can’t recall who…

And the lady behind the counter told me that they ALL HAD ALCOHOL!
I was crushed.
Okay, you might wonder why she would volunteer this information out of the blue especially as I hadn’t even started talking to her. Well, I’m muslim and wearing hijab and…if I’m following my religion, no alcohol at all.

I mean, WHY!
(All their specialty cakes mind you).

So, I had to decide to learn to bake myself…
*sniffle*
Okay, I can bake if I want to.
I just don’t usually waste time baking CAKES.
Cakes are bought or from boxes…unless it’s an interesting cake, interesting enough for me to want to try it out.

*sigh*
I wish I knew my Kiss baking company history better. This is very boring prose.
Wikipedia just has a stub with a link to a non-existant website.
I could’ve waited until later and interrogated my parents.

The point of this story is that one day, I was in the grocery and the refrigerated section had slices. Most of them were clearly marked with a sticker saying “Contains Alcohol”. But there were a couple with “Alcohol-Free” tags (Black Forest and Chocolate Truffle).

So, I said my prayers and bought them.
They’re pretty:

  2. Thank you!
I’ve never been very much impressed with my Googling skills :)

  3. I like their chocolate. Tastes like chocolate and not too sweet.
And I think their original flavour was orange, not lemon for the kisscakes.

  4. argh….yellow background and white text
    my eyes scream

  5. THANK YOU
I thought it was orange too but when they started labelling them they called it lemon and i was confused!

  6. PS

    Your eyes always scream

    anywayz this is temporary
    it’s a work in progress
you can comment and give what u like/don’t like in not done yet

  7. That chocolate cake looks tempting but I can resist sweet things – food that is. I am not a food expert so I don’t know the reason why alcohol is added to anything but food establishments should be more aware that not everybody cares for the alcohol. Having said that, an old lady told me once that a black cake without the rum was like pelau without the peas :)

  8. black on yellow much better – but was the yellow glowing this eerily before? kinda harsh for people on a Monday….

aka_lol – it have people in this world who make pelau without any peas at all, just meat and rice; some who insist on it being ONLY pigeon peas; and then those who can’t fathom “boring” pelau with only one kind of meat. Mom’s black cake is excellent and moist. What I have never had, I guess I won’t miss :-D

remember our waiter in 360 who told us about the wines in the sauces, so we had the peppercorn gravy which was soooo good. I should find a recipe.

  9. no it wasn’t
this is pure yellow…before it was a darker yellow
i’m working on it…slowly…the niece doesn’t give one much time you know

that’s just what i was going to say, “what we never had, we never miss”
i’m not sure the idea of going all boozy in a cake appeals to me but oh well

i think aka_lol, they’re putting flavourings or extracts into the cakes which have alcohol. but not all cakes have that.

    yes…find the recipe
it tasted VERY good with the duck
    orange duck
    hmph

  10. Chennette – I wasn’t a big fan of pelau until about three years ago when I found a recipe which changed me forever. Ok, too dramatic but for me pelau is the peas so I tend to be heavy on the peas when I make it. I am also heavy on the sugar for browning.

Lilandra – I would hate to go boozy on a cake and then wake up the next morning not remembering what the cake tasted like. I always say if you can’t remember what it tasted like and smile then it probably wasn’t worth tasting. I think black forest cake has alcohol – I remember staggering :)

  11. Thats picture looks fantastic…Thanks for posting, now I want chocolate!

  12. OK, now I gotta have a piece-a-cake!

  13. i myself have to learn how to make cakes!

  14. Looks delicious. I leave out the alcohol in mine. Thanks

  15. cool!

i bought myself rose levy beranbaum’s the cake bible
wish me luck baking my way through it :-)

  16. Hello, I’m from Jamaica and the Kiss Baking company used to export its cupcakes here, they orange cakes “with the heart of cream” :). A few years ago the company started making new flavours of the cupcakes and then suddenly they stopped selling down here. It was a blow to many of us ’cause we used to feed them during break and lunch. Have they stopped manufacturing them?

  17. Hi Alexia!

Thanks for visiting. I have it set to approve new posters…
Now, they haven’t stopped manufacturing them.
Or at least, they still make the plain cake, the chocolate cake, with the cream filling and with icing or no icing.
I think they still make the pink ones (and possible the other flavour creams but I only go for plain with plain filling or chocolate frosted with plain filling so I can’t be certain. I’m a bit myopic). I can go to the grocery store and check to see if they still have the other flavours and take a picture if you like.

Finding out why they’re not exporting to Jamaica is another thing.
    Hmmm.
I wonder if they have an email address…

  18. what we think of as plain is orange-flavoured
they still export to Guyana…so wonder if it is shipping costs? or is there a new competitor in Jamaica?

  19. please delete above comment, wrong company, got confused with cross commenting

  20. i know it’s orange but in my youth i thought it was lemon so hard for me to write orange!
